2024 marks the 54th anniversary of the world’s largest environmental EARTH DAY! The theme of “Planet vs. Plastics” encourages us to consider our use of single-use plastics and their impact on the environment.

Let’s look at the history of Earth Day in the United States and around the world:

In 1970, US Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin created this national day to raise awareness of the environment and how humans have an impact on the natural world. On April 22, 1970, millions of Americans took to the streets to protest ignorance and launch an environmental movement.

Since then, Earth Day is celebrated as an international event in 193 countries. No matter where you are on April 22, you can still make a difference on Earth Day–and every day.

All over the world, we have an impact on our environment through our actions:

  • We use electricity and water for everyday living – sometimes more than our fair share.
  • Transport such as cars, busses, and airplanes take us to school or work. Many of these vehicles still contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Food harvest and transport can also have a major impact on our environment. Being aware of where our food comes from, how it is grown, and how far it has to be transported for us to consume it can help prevent excess chemicals in the environment, chemicals in our bodies, and chemicals in the air. Local food is always best.
  • The waste we produce and our disposal processes are creating many problems in the environment, particularly plastic pollution. Microplastics are entering our food chains, and believe it or not, you are consuming plastic now.
  • Even in the deepest parts of Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, the deepest point on earth, scientists recently found plastic bags and beer cans. Scary!

We know that everyone can’t do everything, but we believe that everyone can do something, and even small efforts can have a large impact. So think about all the ways you can make a difference. If you have questions, let us know!

We can help.
