If you haven’t heard, let me share the good news: October is Oyster Month in North Carolina! And since it’s October 2nd already, you have wasted two days of oyster-eating deliciousness, my friend. It’s time to kick it in gear!

oyster-month-2025

This is the third anniversary of October being officially declared Oyster Month in our state and the NC Oyster Trail, one of our partners, is celebrating with a month that is absolutely jam-packed full of great oyster-related events. If you like to eat oysters and are interested in the many, many ways to prepare both wild and farmed oysters, you’re day has arrived!

Jane Harrison is a coastal economy specialist for the NC Sea Grant Program and she works year-round to make sure the NC Oyster Trail is ready for the month of October. As much as we love the edible parts of this month-long celebration, the real goodness is found in all the opportunities we have to learn about how and why oysters are critical for our coastal ecosystem and economy.

The press release said it perfectly, “…NC Oyster Month is about more than just what’s on the plate. Every oyster tells a bigger story—one of healthy waters working waterfronts, and traditions that connect generations. Wild oysters protect our shorelines and provide homes for marine life, while farmed oysters support local businesses and bring fresh, distinct flavors to tables across the state. Together, they sustain our coast both ecologically and economically.”

And I’m here to tell you, it’s a beautiful thing.

If you’d like to check out some of the oyster month events, like the Oyster Festival above, take a look at this listing on the NC Oyster Trail website. You can also see oyster events that go on throughout the winter here.

And the full press release is found here. Oyster Month 2025 is literally being celebrated all over the state, not just along the coast, because oysters mean a lot more to the state of North Carolina than simply good food.

We hope to see you there!
