The history that lies within North Carolina is deeply tied to technologies that allowed early North Carolinians to survive and thrive in some very unfriendly habitats: think swamps filled with malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Today, exploring historic sites across the state allows one to experience the development of science and technology first hand. Science didn’t arrive in North Carolina with modern laboratories—it has always been here. The methods have changed, but the spirit of curiosity, observation, experimentation, and innovation has remained constant from the Revolutionary era to today’s research universities and science centers.
Waterwheels and Gristmills
Before electricity powered our communities, water did the work. Early North Carolinians learned to harness the energy of flowing streams by building water wheels that converted the force of moving water into mechanical power. Through a series of gears and shafts, that energy turned massive millstones capable of grinding grain into flour and cornmeal, helping communities become more self-sufficient and prosperous. Historic gristmills found at several North Carolina Science Trail partner sites remind us that these weren’t simply old buildings—they were remarkable examples of physics, engineering, and innovation. Every turning wheel demonstrated how understanding the natural forces around us could improve daily life, proving that science has always been an essential part of North Carolina’s story.
